Network of Women and Gender Minorities in History
Western’s history department works actively to foster the success of its graduate students. This group started a few years ago as a space for women and gender minorities in our faculty and amongst our graduate students to interact with each other in a casual context. It is meant to provide a space for conversations and thoughtful, low pressure mentoring.
The Network of Women and Gender Minorities in History aspires to create a space inclusive of all self-identifying women and gender minorities across the sexual orientation and gender spectrum. That means we welcome cisgender, transgender, two-spirit, intersex, genderqueer, and gender non-binary folks to attend our meetings. We welcome participants from across campus to join us. While these are primarily attended by members of the History department, we value diverse viewpoints and often have women and gender minorities attend, who are not directly in History.
The group meets about once a month and discusses topics ranging from imposter syndrome, racism, running tutorials and other learning spaces, engaging with professors or individuals with authority, publishing, and more. We approach each of these topics through a feminist lens, to understand the uniquely gendered experiences of women and gender minorities in the field of history.
The dates/times for these sessions are determined a few weeks before hand, based on the schedules of faculty and graduate students within the department. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for detailed event information or if you have any questions, please email lshire@uwo.ca.
